GENESIS
CHAPTER
27
1. When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see, he called his elder son Esau and said to him, "My son"; and he answered, "Here I am." 2 He said, "See, I am old; I do not know the day of my death. 3. Now then, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field, and, hunt game for me.
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 1 to 3)
After some time in our relationship with God our eyes may also become dim. We may start taking God for granted and may not always respond to God's Words and his ways. On reflecting we can stop and think about how many times God has called us in our lives by means of people or situations and maybe, we told him that we were not available or to ask somebody else.
In response to our attitude God tells us to gather our wits faith, and use all of our skills and carry out what He wants us to do. As in the case of Isaac I asked God to find me a person to follow me in my footsteps, a person who would be willing to continue this Bible Analysis just in case something happens to me that would render me unable to use a keyboard or even die. In a nutshell God answered my prayer and sent me a person who is able to carry out this assignment instead of me. With God's help he is currently praying on Genesis chapter 28 and will soon be ready.
4. Then prepare for me savory food, such as I like, and bring it to me to eat, so that I may bless you before I die."
(Genesis chapter 27 verse 4)
People who are walking in God's ways become friends with Him and like the saints become part of His inner circle. Therefore it holds that when we become friends with somebody we come to know what that person likes and dislikes or really hates. On this knowledge base, we can base our everyday life and evaluate our actions in order to see if they are approved of by God or not.
5. Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game and bring it, 6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, " I heard your father say to your brother Esau, 7 'Bring me game, and prepare for me savory food to eat, that I may bless you before the LORD before I die.' 8. Now therefore, my son obey my word as I command you. 9 Go to the flock, and get me two choice kids, so that I may prepare from them savory food for your father, such as he likes; 10 and you shall take it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies."
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 5 to 10)
God has fashioned a plan for our salvation, that unlike many online websites is totally secure, however at times we tend to interfere with God's plans and intervene without considering the related consequences. As in the case of Rebekah who considered Jacob to be worthy of leading the group more than his brother Esau, we make choices or show favouritism among our children or people of our inner circles, that may later have negative consequences. Although Rebekah was aware that although Jacob was born second, she was also aware that, God had already chosen him over his brother Esau. However she still chose to intervene on God's agenda. We tend to do the same mistake in our every day life interventions.
11. But Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, "Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I am a man of smooth skin. 12 Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be mocking him, and bring a curse on myself and not a blessing." 13 His mother said to him, "Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my word, and go, get them for me."
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 11 to 13)
In the face of dishonesty, sin and corruption we are still to stand firm and consider the consequences of the sin that we are about to commit. Others may promise us their support in committing the negative act, however when things go wrong we are the ones who will have to face the music, and even in the case of Jesus, when the pressure increased, they abandoned him, and left Him on his own to face the harsh reality of the passion.
14. So he went and got them and brought them to his mother; and his mother prepared savory food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the best garments of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob; 16 and she put the skins of the kids on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 Then she handed the savory food, and the bread that she had prepared, to her son Jacob.
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 14 to 17)

(Genesis chapter 27 verses 5 to 10)

(Genesis chapter 27 verses 11 to 13)

Others may promise us their support in committing the negative act, however when things go wrong we are the ones who will have to face the music, and even in the case of Jesus, when the pressure increased, they abandoned him, and left Him on his own to face the harsh reality of the passion.
14. (Genesis chapter 27 verses 14 to 17)
Once the devil takes us in his grasp he gives us many creative ideas in order to carry out our plans as in the case of Rebekah. She managed to cover all physical features of Jacob and created a perfect semblance of Esau. Moreover she cooked Isaac's favourite meal, in order to make the charade appear totally convincing.
18. So he went in to his father, and said, "My father"; and he said, "Here I am; who are you, my son?"
(Genesis chapter 27 verse 18)
Isaac asks Jacob a very delicate and penetrating question. Who are you? Are you really my son or are you a tool in the hand of Satan. God asks us the same question. Are you the same person that I created. It is as if now that we are stained by sin our person has changed so, much that so to say He does not even recognise us. Yes sin changes us to a lower form of existence that lowers us in status much lower than the animals that God created to be inferior to humans. Once in such a dreadful and pitiful state, we lie, we kill both body and soul and perform the most inhumane atrocities as witnessed in both past present and maybe even in the future.
19. Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your first born. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, so that you may bless me."
(Genesis chapter 27 verse 19)
On reflecting we can observe the great change that took place in Jacob. This can be reflected by his diction, that reflects panic and a great sense of urgency to get the job or task done and over with. Jacob is already fearing the consequences if Esau was to catch him red handed. If we are not afraid of God in such circumstances, the fear of the consequences of our sin is enough to instil fear in us.
20. But Isaac said to his son, " How is it that you have found it so quickly my son?" He answered, "Because the LORD your God granted me success." 21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Come near, that I may feel you, my son to know whether you are really my son Esau or not."22. So Jacob went up to his father Isaac, who felt him and said, "The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau."
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 20 to 22)
It seems that Isaac seems to doubt Jacob's credibility. False hood can never be trusted and some how the truth always surfaces. In his panic Jacob uses all his cards in order to save himself. He lies time and time again about his identity and in doing even makes bad use of God. When deep in our sin God continues to try and convince us in turning back from our ways. This is done by means of Isaac's lack of belief.
23. He did not recognize him because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's hands; so he blessed him.
(Genesis chapter 27 verse 23)
As humans we cannot always trust our senses, however we can always trust our faith in Jesus, that with the passing of time and fruitful experiences of God, help to continue to increase our faith in Him.
24. He said "Are you really my son Esau?" He answered, "I am." 25 Then he said, "Bring it to me, that I may eat of my son's game and bless you." So he brought it to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine and he drank.
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 24 to 25)
The image portrayed to us by verses 24 to 25 is that of the trial endured by Peter in the New Testament. Like Isaac Saint Peter or Peter the Apostle was questioned three times if he knew Jesus. Throughout verses 20 to 24 Isaac shows concrete doubt about the identity of the person before him and even questions by a addressing this issue for more than one time before he was convinced enough to give his blessing. Each time Jacob was questioned about his true identity, each time Jacob must have endured great pain on many levels. The greatest hurt may have been that his father always preferred his brother Esau more than him. The second greatest hurt was that although he had showed his father the much needed evidence to him his, father still doubted him. But the greatest hurt, was that Jacob could not reveal his true self to his father and truly express the honest truth to him on a father to son relationship.
As Christians we may experience the same feelings of Jacob both on a spiritual level and even on an emotional level. We need only to stop and think how many times we wished to stop and discuss delicate issues with our parents, and with God, and for reasons such as fear, rejection etc, we could never do so.
26. Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come near and kiss me, my son." 27 So he came near him and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his garments, and blessed him, and said, "Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed. 28 May God give you of the dew of heaven and of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine. 29 Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be everyone who blesses you!"
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 26 to 29)
On reflecting as parents we have the God given authority to bless our children, however the same tongue that utters the blessing can easily utter a curse. On the other hand the feeling or transmission of love can be done in good faith by means of a kiss, however the same kiss that in itself is good can be transmitted as a form of dishonesty and deceit as in the case of Isaac in the Old Testament and Judas Iscariot in the New Testament amongst others.
30. As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of his father Isaac his brother Esau came in from his hunting.
(Genesis chapter 27 verse 30)
As in all events any action has its counter action and timing is of the utmost importance. In order to prevent further harm and maybe even the loss of life, God took control of the situation and made it possible that Esau and Jacob would not meet at the same time and at the same place.
31. He also prepared savory food, and brought it to his father. And he said to his father, "Let my father sit up and eat of his son's game, so that you may bless me." 32 His father Isaac said to him, "Who are you?" He answered, " I am your first born son, Esau." 33 Then Isaac trembled violently, and said, "Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate it all before you came, and I have blessed him?- yes, and blessed he shall be!"
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 31 to 33)
Try as we may to attempt to disclose the truth, it always seems to surface. Moreover the sins that the Devil entices us to commit, are always revealed by the light of God and that, light is strong enough to penetrate the darkness of evil. On reflecting according to Isaac once a blessing is given it cannot be reversed. This can be also said for God's love for us which is everlasting even though we may sin against him.
34. When Esau heard his father's words, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, "Bless me, me also, father!"
(Genesis chapter 27 verse 34)
On reflecting may it be that Esau's cry for his father's blessing may also be our cry for God's blessing and that of every Christian, may our souls always thirst for Him.
35. But he said, "Your brother came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing." 36 Esau said, " Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright; and look now he has taken away my blessing." Then he said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?"
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 35 to 36)
Although Jacob was promised by his mother that she would take upon herself, Isaac's curse if this was the case, Jacob got the full blame of his wrong doing by his father. Apparently when reason fails we become totally emotional, and start making false assumptions. Esau falsely accused Jacob of stealing his birthright, without considering that for a bowl of food he had sold it to Jacob. Moreover when emotions are at play we become very egoistic. Esau asked his father for his blessing without considering that previously Esau had not valued it. With God we do the same. We ask God to give us his blessing, however when the opportunity arises, we turn our back on God and do whatever we want to.
37. Isaac answered Esau, "I have already made him your lord, and I have given him all his brothers as servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son? 38 Esau said to his father, "Have you only one blessing, father Bless me, me also father!" And Esau lifted his voice and wept.
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 37 to 38)
Apparently blessings are like promises. They are irreversible, meaning once they are made, they cannot be reversed. On reflecting there are many promises such as those given before God during marriage, those given to God during the time of an ordination to the priesthood etc. However although such promises are considered in nature as being irreversible due to human sinful intervention we have laws such as divorce, annulment and separation that have the power of undoing the sacred bond and or promise made before God.
39. Then his father Isaac answered him: "See, away from the fatness of the earth shall your home be, and away from the dew of heaven on high. 40 By your sword you shall live, and you shall serve your brother; but when you break loose, you shall break his yoke from your neck."
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 39 to 40)
Unlike Isaac God has an unlimited amount of blessings, that in His generosity He bestows on us, by means of the Roman Catholic Church. Moreover on reflecting God's blessings are all of a superior quality, however Isaac could not give the same blessing to Esau. Moreover Esau's blessing was more of a prophesy that was to take place in the future more than a blessing in itself.
According to Isaac Esau would live a quality of life, that would be inferior to that of his brother Jacob, to whom for a period of time Esau would be a subject of. However Isaac prompted by God who is the true source of prophecy says there will be a time, when Esau would no longer be subject to his brother Jacob. On reflecting there have been cases of parents, who on their death bed, made promises, or even gave curses on their children, that had catastrophic effects, and that like a self-fulfilling prophecy had negative psychological implications for life. Therefore as parents or people in authority we are to be careful of, the promises, blessings or even curses (God forbid) that we may impart on our children or significant others.
41. Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, " The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob."
(Genesis chapter 27 verse 41)
Once in a state of anger, we become an open door for the Devil, who takes pride in manipulating both our emotions and the circumstances in order to create more confusion and chaos, so that he will gain our souls, so that they will perish in hell. Satan's goal is that of winning as many souls as possible away from God. Therefore the best way to accomplish this goal is through the death of his victim. Satan implants in our souls, plans of murder, and or destruction and gives us all the necessary opportunities to carry out such a sinful act.
42. But the words of her elder son Esau were told to Rebekah; so she sent and called her younger son Jacob and said to him, "Your brother Esau is consoling himself by planning to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; flee at one to my brother Laban in Haran, 44 and stay with him a while until your brother's fury turns away, 45- and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send, and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?"
(Genesis chapter 27 verses 42 to 45)
On reflecting it can be concluded that our plans are not always God's plans. This means that what we have in mind as in the case of Esau, may not be in accordance with God's plans as in the given scenario. Therefore God intervenes in order to put the jumbled pieces of the original master plan back in place by means of particular interventions with the aid of humans or even directly by means of God's direct intervention.
46. Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am weary of my life because of the Hittite women. If Jacob marries one of the Hittite women such as these, one of the women of the land, what good will my life be to me?"
(Genesis chapter 27 verse 46)
On reflecting on the last verse of the twenty-seventh chapter of the book of Genesis, we can infer to what length or measure will the heart of the human mother will endure in order to safeguard the well being of her offspring. In order to preserve Jacob's life, Rebekah uses emotional blackmail in order to persuade her husband to obey her wish, that of sending Jacob away to her brother Laban with the intention of marriage in order to create a gap in time between the two brothers acting on the premise that time would heal the injured emotions. However in truth the healing process may take quite a long time. At times it may take more time than we imagine that may even last up to the critical moment of death.
I would like to end this chapter with the following prayer, however before offering my prayer to God I would like to inform you that the following chapter that is Genesis Chapter 28 has been prayed on by Mr. Deevain ajit pawar. Hope you also reflect on the Word of God and reap its manifold blessings.
Oh God my father thank you for the many blessings that you impart on me and my family and many others. Thank you for providing me with a follower who is willing to continue this online meditation on your Word when I die. Please help me to remain faithful to my calling both as a married man, and a fervent Christian. I also pray that you never leave my side, especially during times of temptations and tribulations. I also pray that you help me be thankful for all that you have given me, and to accept my role in life and not grumble for it to be as I wish instead of as you want it. Forgive me for those moments when I tried to have my own will instead of obeying you and your plan for my salvation.
Thank You God
